News: Czech Government Proposes To Ease Cannabis Rules

Published 11:02 AM EST, Fri September 27, 2024

The Czech justice ministry proposed on Monday to legalize the growing of up to three cannabis plants and the possession of up to 50 grams of dried hemp at home.

Outside the home, it will be legal to hold up to 25 grams of dried cannabis, says the draft amendment to the penal code, shown to AFP by ministry spokesman Vladimir Repka. "The legalisation only concerns growing and possession for one's own needs by people older than 21," the bill says.

To take effect, the amendment has to be approved by the government and parliament and signed into law by the president. The ministry said the bill was motivated by a change in the perception of the recreational use of marijuana by adults.

The possession of four to five plants or 51-100 grams of dried cannabis at home, or up to 50 grams outside the home, will be considered a minor offence. The possession of a higher number of plants or amount of dried cannabis will be a crime, the ministry said.
